Rehearsal Dinner
Before I dive into this post, I just have to say — I’ve never shot a wedding in Florida during the summer. Heck, I’d never even been to Florida until about a month before this destination wedding for two of the most amazing people, Bailey & Jackson. Someone definitely could have warned me about the heat (or maybe I should’ve done a bit more research on what summer weather is like down south, lol).
I’ve been working with these two since 2020 — before the engagement, before their two beautiful babies, and of course, before they said "I do." Over the years, I’ve seen them move into new homes, announce pregnancies, and celebrate so many special moments together. So by the time their wedding day finally arrived, I truly felt like part of the family.
The whole experience felt less like work and more like a vacation, thanks to their incredible hospitality. They even invited me to the rehearsal dinner with zero expectations for me to take photos — just to hang out and enjoy the evening. Of course, being the photographer that I am, my camera never stayed too far from my side! 😄
Tips for couples planning a destination wedding
Planning a destination wedding can be incredibly exciting, but it also comes with its own set of unique challenges. First and foremost, start by selecting a location that speaks to you as a couple — whether it’s a beautiful beach, a romantic European city, or a scenic mountaintop. Once you've decided on a location, it’s important to give yourself plenty of time to plan (at least 12 to 18 months) to accommodate travel arrangements, legal requirements, and vendor coordination. A local wedding planner can be a lifesaver in helping you navigate everything from permits to vendor recommendations. And don't forget to communicate all your plans and expectations with your photographer, especially if you're choosing a destination that requires a bit of travel for them. The more information you provide upfront, the better they’ll be able to capture your dream day. Finally, consider your guests' experience too! Make sure accommodations, transportation, and activities are easy to navigate, and offer helpful tips for those who may be unfamiliar with the area. With a bit of planning and flexibility, your destination wedding can be the perfect mix of adventure, romance, and unforgettable memories.
The Big Day
It goes by so fast
The big day is finally here. You wake up, vendors are arriving, setting up early, and before you know it, you’re about to smash cake in your partner’s face and the night is almost over. It goes by in the blink of an eye. I’m speaking from experience — not just from my own wedding but from all the weddings I’ve attended and worked. Every single couple is always shocked at how quickly the day flies by once the ceremony starts.
If there’s only one thing I want you to take away from this post, it’s this: Breathe. Relax. Take it all in. Nothing moves forward unless you’re ready. Seriously, don’t stress if you’re running a few minutes behind. Yes, timelines are important, but if you’re about to lose it over a wrinkle in your dress, a late relative, or a little hiccup — I promise you, it’s okay. Even if the forecast says clear skies and then a few clouds pop up with a chance of rain, it’ll all work out. And let me tell you, have you ever seen wedding photos in the rain? Absolutely magical.
I know, I know — you're probably like me, a total Type-A, timeline-obsessed person, and you want everything to go perfectly. But sometimes, I have to remind myself (and remind couples) that everything happens the way it’s meant to. And at the end of the day, your wedding day is about YOU two, celebrating love. The small stuff? It really doesn't matter.
